Temple Etiquette in Bhutan

Back to Guides

Visiting Bhutan's sacred sites requires respect for religious customs. Follow these guidelines:

Before Entering:

  • Remove shoes and hats
  • Turn off mobile phones
  • Ask permission before photographing (often not allowed inside)

Inside the Temple:

  • Walk clockwise around shrines and religious objects
  • Don't point feet at altars or statues
  • Don't touch religious objects or murals
  • Speak softly and avoid disturbing those praying

Dress Code:

  • Cover shoulders and knees
  • Avoid revealing clothing
  • Remove sunglasses when speaking to monks

Offerings:

  • You may offer money or butter lamps
  • Small donations are appreciated but never expected
  • Accept blessed items (holy water, threads) respectfully

Interacting with Monks:

  • Don't touch monks or their robes
  • Women should not hand items directly to monks
  • It's polite to bow slightly as a greeting
